The Honourable Minister of State for Defence H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, MON, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for approving a salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Minister described the decision as a landmark demonstration of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, morale, and operational effectiveness of gallant officers and men who continue to make immense sacrifices in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Dr. Matawalle disclosed that the issue of Armed Forces’ salary review had been on the front burner since the inception of the present administration, and that he had personally championed the cause within government circles.
He thanked Mr. President for his visionary leadership, steadfast advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of military personnel, which he said contributed immensely to this remarkable achievement.
“It is a clear reflection of your passion for building a motivated, resilient, and highly professional Armed Forces capable of effectively addressing Nigeria’s security challenges,” he stated.
“May the Almighty God continue to grant you divine wisdom, strength, sound health, and greater accomplishments as you faithfully provide positive leadership for the nation. May the Armed Forces of Nigeria continue to grow in capacity, professionalism, unity, and victory under your leadership,” the Minister prayed.
According to Dr. Matawalle, the approved salary increases range from 30 to 80 per cent for personnel of the Armed Forces, with about 250,000 personnel expected to benefit from the new pay package.
He explained that the salary increase, approved by the President, will take effect from 1st September, 2026.
Giving a breakdown, the Minister stated that officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will benefit from an 80 per cent increase.
The Minister noted that the decision is part of the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel who are involved in combating banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” Dr. Matawalle quoted the President as saying.
He added that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through the provision of weapons and technological tools required to effectively discharge their duties.
Charging members of the Armed Forces, Dr. Matawalle urged them to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and sacrifices.
“I urge our servicemen to take this gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
