The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, felicitates with journalists and workers across the FCT on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
To mark the May day celebration, Comrade Ike, in her statement described this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as both timely and reflective of the pressing realities confronting workers nationwide. She noted that the theme highlights the urgent need to tackle the twin challenges of insecurity and economic hardship, which continue to undermine productivity, threaten livelihoods, and erode the dignity of labour.
She commended journalists and media professionals in the FCT for their resilience and dedication, acknowledging the difficult conditions under which they operate. According to her, media practitioners often face significant safety risks while striving to inform, educate, and hold authorities accountable.
Comrade Ike further observed that persistent insecurity not only endangers lives but also restricts access to information and hampers the ability of journalists to carry out their responsibilities effectively. She added that poverty and rising economic pressures continue to adversely affect the welfare, morale, and overall well-being of workers.
The NUJ FCT Chairman called on government at all levels to intensify efforts towards improving national security and implementing policies that directly address poverty. She emphasised that ensuring a safe working environment and expanding economic opportunities are essential to achieving decent work for all Nigerians.
She also urged media organisations and employers within the FCT to prioritise the welfare of journalists through fair remuneration, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and access to continuous professional development, stressing that the protection and motivation of workers are vital to national progress.
Reaffirming the union’s commitment, Comrade Ike called for strengthened solidarity among members, urging them to continue advocating for the rights, safety, and dignity of journalists while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
She encouraged journalists and workers in the FCT to remain steadfast and committed despite prevailing challenges, expressing optimism that through collective effort and purposeful engagement, a safer, more equitable, and prosperous society can be achieved.
On behalf of the leadership of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Ike wished all journalists and workers in the Federal Capital Territory a reflective, safe, and fulfilling May Day celebration.
