Grace Ike, made this known today in Abuja, during a One Day Media Parley/Workshop on illegal Mining: The Role of the Media.

In her speech, Ike stated that illegal mining is an issue that not only threatens our environment but also endangers lives, undermines economic development, and fuels insecurity in many parts of our country. Adding that the media as the fourth estate and the voice of the people, stands at the frontline hence the need for effective collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders to address these worrisome issues is vital.

*”As gatekeepers of truth and agents of accountability, our duty as journalists goes beyond mere reportage, we must investigate, expose and educate the public on the devastating effects of illegal mining particularly on communities and water resources”.* Grace Stressed.

The Chairman, expressed that the council will continue to champion, amplify the voices of affected communities, ensuring that their stories and struggles are heard nationwide because empowering citizens with information gives them the tools to demand better regulatory oversight and environmental protection.

According to her, in an era of digital technology and social media, the media industry has even greater reach and influence, therefore we must leverage these platforms responsibly to disseminate vital information, debunk misinformation, and encourage a national conversation on sustainable mining practices.

While urging journalists, she said our credibility and integrity are crucial to maintaing public trust. Let us continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in our coverage of illegal mining activities.

Dignitaries and Stakeholders at the media parley were the Commissioner of Police FCT (CP) Ajao Saka Adewale, Commandant Mining Marshal Attah John Onoja and, the National President Minners Association Dele Ayanleke, Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council.
