In a powerful statement to mark International Human Rights Day, Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, President of the Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV), has called for urgent action to address gender-based violence against women in politics, with this year’s theme, “Empowering Women to End Gender-Based Violence in Politics,” underscores the need for a collective response to protect women leaders and ensure their active participation in governance.
Awunah-Ikyegh highlighted the significant role women play in strengthening democracy and fostering development. However, she expressed concern over the persistent challenges women face, including harassment, threats, and systemic barriers designed to exclude them from the political sphere.

“Gender-based violence in politics is a gross violation of human rights that undermines our democratic principles,” Awunah-Ikyegh said. “As we commemorate this day, we must commit to empowering women and dismantling the structures that perpetuate discrimination and violence.”
She further stated that Nigeria women’s participation in politics is crucial for promoting democracy and good governance. However, women in politics face numerous challenges, including gender-based violence, harassment, and intimidation. According to a report by the National Democratic Institute, 70% of women politicians in Nigeria have experienced some form of violence or harassment.
The statistics are alarming. In 2020, the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission reported that 43% of women in Nigeria had experienced physical or sexual violence. Furthermore, the World Health Organization estimates that one in three women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
The NILOWV President called on government institutions, political parties, and civil society organizations to adopt and enforce policies that protect women from political violence. She emphasized the need for:
- Stronger Legislation: Implementation of laws to prosecute offenders and safeguard women in leadership.
-
Awareness Campaigns: Public education to challenge harmful stereotypes and promote gender equality.
-
Support Systems: Providing legal aid, counseling, and mentorship programs for women affected by political violence.
Awunah-Ikyegh also appealed to political parties to demonstrate commitment to inclusivity by supporting female candidates and creating equitable structures within their organizations.
“Women are not just participants; they are leaders and change-makers who bring diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to governance. It is time we create a safe and enabling environment for them to thrive,” she added.
She further encouraged women across Nigeria to rise above intimidation and continue advocating for their rightful place in leadership. NILOWV, she said, remains committed to championing gender equity and supporting initiatives that foster women’s political empowerment.
International Human Rights Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of protecting fundamental rights and freedoms. This year’s focus on women’s leadership in politics sends a clear message: the fight against gender-based violence is integral to achieving a just and inclusive society.
“By empowering women and ending violence against them, we can build a democracy that reflects the strength and diversity of our nation,” Awunah-Ikyegh concluded.
